Barn Charm: Watching

Since I began linking up to Barn Charm every Tuesday, I’ve started noticing barns that I’ve passed by for years without really seeing. This barn is located between my home town of Bacon’s Castle and the next larger town of Smithfield. It sits rather close to the highway behind an old country store that’s been closed for years..

This old barn saw me passing by on Saturday mornings as a child when Mom and I would travel to Smithfield to do our weekly shopping and have a lime-ade at the drug store soda fountain.

This old barn watched me as a new high school graduate travel to work every morning in Smithfield and return home in the afternoon.

After I married, and Marshall was born, this old barn saw us drive by every Sunday morning on our way to church and back home again in the afternoon after lunch at my Mom’s.

In recent years, the old barn has seen me travel by less often.

Although I’ve passed by this old barn more times than I could count, I can honestly say that I never really saw it until a few weeks ago, when Motor Man pointed to it.

It’s leaning so badly, the picture almost appears distorted.

We thought I should get pictures while it’s still watching folks pass by.

That may not be the case much longer.

Linking up to Barn Charm.

  1. Looks like that old barn could topple with the next strong wind yet just look how many strong winds/storms/rains it’s survived all these years. It’s leaning but still standing…….like an old friend, it’s still hanging on!

  2. great shots. hope no tough winds show up or i believe it may fall over. (:

  3. Since I’m a ‘tad’ older than you are, I’ve probably passed this barn more times than you have. BUT for the life of me, I cannot remember where it is!! I need a refresher for my old, faulty memory!!

  4. She’s a charmer, for sure. What a steadfast old barn… thanks for introducing us!

  5. Oh Dianna! I hope it keeps its leaning charming self together so it can keep watching! These barns for Barn Charm seem to take on a life and personality of their own when you write some sweet words and a story to go along! Lovely Barn Charm Tuesday Dianna!

  6. What a wonderful old barn, and sad that it will one day be gone. You shared a lovely journey this morning, Dianna. Thank you.

  7. Oh my, I think you caught it just in time. 🙂

  8. I often, when seeing pics of old barns wonder what treasures lie beneath or were stored in them for many years…

  9. You’ll be so glad you captured this old charmer for posterity. It doesn’t look long for this world, but then who knows? Don’t you know this one could tell some tales!

  10. It’s amazing what we take for granted n don’t really see. This old barn has been watching you for a long time. I have to tell you after reading your post n your mentions of Bacon n Smithfield…you’ve got my mouth watering for some good ham or bacon…LOL

  11. Poor old thing. When I see barns it makes me think of their past…what kinds of animals (or cars!) they sheltered. How many kids played in their lofts. It’s a look at a worthwhile past, one that fulfilled a great need I’m sure.
Seems like such a waste…all that cool wood and metal. I wish I had the wherewithal to start a barn salvage business and re-sell all those cool materials!

  14. Since I am with June—-Refresh my memory. What a lovely has-been………………….

  15. It certainly still has charm! It looks like it was a good working barn in its day.

  16. This is another old barn that worked hard during a long life. I can say that I don’t ever remember seeing this one, either! Love that loft opening !

  17. Oh my gosh, that brought tears to my eyes…
That old barn has been waiting for someone to truly take notice & to get some beautiful pictures so that it’ll always be remembered!
God bless rural America & all of us who are committed to never letting its beauty die!!!

Thanks for sharing w/ us at Barn Charm =)

  18. I tend to get emotional about these old barns… I just love em so much, so don’t mind me… =)

  19. Poor ol’ thing! It’s seen so much and made it through it all kind of like us humans. We may start ‘leaning’ a bit too when we get to a certain age. Hope it continues to stand for a little while longer.

  20. Very good photos of this old barn.

    Regards and best wishes

  21. That’s a neat-looking barn, Dianna. Isn’t it funny, the things we pass by so often, but rarely notice?

  22. I found that I started really noticing barns after joining barn charm too! This is a great old barn and I love what you wrote about it too.

  23. That’s a lovely old barn and obviously a survivor. II hope it will be watching you pass by for a good many years yet.

  24. I’m glad you captured this barn before it collapsed. Can the wood be reclaimed possibly?

  25. THANK YOU for preserving this old barn through your lens!! It’s sad to see these beautiful old buildings fall into disrepair like this. I had the same thing happen to me…hubby and I would pass an old homestead on our way to Amish country and I never thought to take a photo..until I started blogging. I got my photo and less than a year later the homestead was torn down! THANK YOU for sharing this with us 🙂

  26. Oooh, love this one! I love how you talk about how it watched you through the years…It makes you wonder – if those walls could talk, what would they say?!

  27. Look at that! Someone is still storing things in that “Leaning Tower or Pisa” barn. I don’t think I’d want to go IN there to get those things out.

  28. You are so lucky to have so many wonderful structures to photograph…thank you for sharing them!!!
