Poetic Thursday: Donnie, The Marble Champ

Wow, the weeks just seem to fly by. It’s Thursday again, and time for more poetry with Pam, Teddy and Angel Sammy at Two Spoiled Cats.

Isn’t this a fun picture?

Here’s my poem:

Donnie, The Marble Champ*

Well, that’s the most fun I’ve ever had.
You look upset, boys, don’t be mad.

Marbles isn’t just a sport for you guys;
girls can win, too, so don’t be surprised.

I’d teach you the secrets of my success,
but I think I’d rather just let you guess.

I won the game, and yes, I’m a girl,
and in a few years, I’ll be  rocking your world.

Let’s play again tomorrow: plan your attack.
Maybe then you can win all your marbles back.

As I usually do with the poetry photos, I did a little research on this one. It is, of  course, a Norman Rockwell painting, titled “The Marble Champion”.  It was published on September 2, 1939, one of 322 Saturday Evening Post covers. The young man in the red cap is Rockwell’s eldest son, Jarvis.

*I named the champion in my poem for my ginger-haired friend, Donna. Her family nickname is Donnie.
