Thursday! Poetry! As usual, I’m joining Pam and her kitties, Teddy and Angel Sammy at Two Spoiled Cats for Poetic Thursday.
This is the photo they gave us last week as inspiration for this week’s poem.
Although my childhood didn’t include pogo sticks, I found this to be a fun, easy poem to write:
Summertime
Summertime, when we were young,
our only thought was having fun.
Pogo sticks in the lane,
skinned knees taught us all about pain.
Pigtails and cowlicks fashioned our looks.
We resembled the kids in Dick and Jane books.
Daylight meant being outside:
there were games to play and bikes to ride.
When darkness fell, by the porch light’s glow,
we caught lightning bugs, then let them go.
When we opened our fingers, they’d crawl to the end.
We’d say: “Fly away home to your family and friends!”
Those times shaped the people we would become,
and we thought we were just having fun.
