Butterfly Of Love

My mom loved butterflies. And she loved this song.

You might wake up some morning
to the sound of something
moving past your window in the wind.
And if you’re quick enough to rise
you’ll catch the fleeting glimpse
of someone’s fading shadow.

Out on the new horizon,
you may see the floating motion
of the distant pair of wings;
and if the sleep has left your ears
you might hear footsteps
running through an open meadow.

Don’t be concerned, it will not harm you.
It’s only me pursuing something I’m not sure of
across my dreams with nets of wonder,
I chase the bright elusive butterfly of love.

These pictures were taken recently through our bedroom window.  Seeing a butterfly almost always reminds me of Mom.  It’s a happy reminder.

  1. I, too, always think of Mom when I see butterflies! Now I’ll probably hear that song within a few days. I think someone on The Weather Channel read your blog about “Brown Eyed Girl” because within a couple of days, it was played on the local weather segment. I’ve NEVER heard it on there before!!

  2. What a beautiful piece! Thank you for making this connection to the song. You make me tear up thinking about “chasing the elusive butterfly”. I do love to start my day here at “These Days…” Such a very nice job!

  7. My mom loved butterflies too. During her own grief process after my dad died, butterflies became a very important symbol for her. Every single time I see a butterfly now, I am somehow comforted.
Thanks for posting these beautiful words and pictures!

  8. I’m still in TN and when butterflies land on people here they say it’s a sign of good luck. Your pictures are lovely.

  16. How interesting this butterfly makes you think of your mother. From my mom’s funeral, to our travel home, and one day when I returned to work, and happened to be in the showroom covering for the receptionist, a perfect, big tiger swallowtail kept making an appearance. Whenever I see one, I remember the comfort I felt when I saw it during those tough days. That’s a beautiful song, too. Thanks for the reminder, Dianna.

  17. Such a special way to think of your Mom — beautiful wings in flight. And the pictures are amazing!!
