Barn Charm And Mystery Animal

…now that I have your attention…

A couple of weeks ago, on one of our country drives, Motor Man and I discovered this red barn.

There were a few animals in the pasture between the barn and the highway.

Now, although I’m not a farm girl,  I AM a country girl. I lived across the highway from a dairy farm for the first 23 years of my life. For much of that time, the farmer beside us had pigs on the property between his house and ours.  (Ah, the aromas.)

But I don’t mind admitting that I have no idea what the animal in this next picture is.

I didn’t think it was a donkey or mule, but I looked up pictures on the internet just to be sure. It’s definitely not a cow, and it doesn’t look like any horse I’ve ever seen.  Look how wide the face is!

So…how about it? Do YOU know? Or do you at least have a guess?

Linking up to Barn Charm… because it’s Tuesday!

  1. Hmm…I wondered in the first shot of the two of them (whatever they are)…..but that last shot with just the brown “one” and his poor little knock-knees has me wondering yet again. Some kind of combo horse/mule (alien???).

    Nice barn!!

    Pam (and Sam)

  2. great shot. what a fuzzy horse. so cute. (:

  3. I am thinking donkey with very messed-up feet! The fuzziness made me think burro at first…nice barn!

  4. Awe, I’ve no idea but he is kind of cute.
On a separate note do you have any idea why I can’t reply with blogger anymore? It has got me stumped!!!

  5. The “barn red” of this barn truly is…and I love that color! No idea about the animal…but seems like a children’s book character in the making!!

  6. Thanks for getting back so quickly Dianna and for your lovely comment. on Karen’s cake.
It’s no trouble commenting on your blog – I always like to come to visit. I just wondered if you knew if there was any issue with blogger.
Take care and have a good day!!!

  7. Beautiful pictures. A bright , happy way to start the day….Happy Easter.

  8. Looks like a burro to me but I really don’t know. Nice barn.

  9. Nice barn…I just love those drives through the country. The last shot looks like a cross of a horse n a mule to me! ???

  10. Odd looking animal! Would be interesting to find out what it is…
    Great barn.

  11. hmmm i don’t know, looks like a cross between a cow and a horse lol…but the poor thing looks like it really needs its hooves trimmed, looks so uncomfortable to go around like that. he’s cute though!

  12. Nice barn and animal photos. I don’t know what the mystery animal is. A shaggy horse? 🙂

  13. Very nice photos. My first thought was ‘that’s what happens when cousins marry’. Bad Veronica!!

  14. I’ll have Rick look at him. hmmmm…

  15. Poor thing needs to have it’s hooves trimmed! It is a strange looking creature…the body looks more like a cow and the head looks kinda like a horse. We didn’t have burros on the farm, so I’m not sure if that is what this is. Hope someone knows! Nice barn!

  16. I have no idea what sort of animal this is ..he looks like he’d be right at home in a Winnie the Pooh story, though ! Great barn, too !

  17. He/she needs their hooves trimmed, BIG TIME! That’s such a shame for someone to get this animal, then neglect it so long that it gets that bad! He’s had to adapt his stand due to the length of those hooves… his legs probably hurt!
It’s a great barn & love the red, it really stands out

    Thanks for joining =)

  18. Oh, I feel for it with those feet/hooves!
    That is beautiful barn!

  19. Like that barn. Hmmm. Good question about what animal that is!

  20. Love the red barn and the donkey or whatever he is is adorable! I do hope they fix his hooves though and soon! He must in pain!

  21. it might be a mini mule (cross between a jack and a pony). we have several next door to us and they definitely look different from most animals. 🙂

  22. I feel incredibly sorry for this animal. He is an example of backyard breeding and he is suffering with his feet. He needs a farrier and he needs someone to save him from the situation he is living in. His hock joints are probably ruined and it won’t be long before his back end collapses. He has adapted but what a shame and he must be in pain. I don’t think I have seen anything quite like him and I have been horsing 50 years! I wonder if the other horse has feet that look like this. Sorry Dianna but I just get so overwhelmed by this kind of neglect. What is really scary is the other horse looks like it has been bred. Either that or it has a big old hay belly. The red barn is charming though!

  23. Nice barn, but I don’t know about that animal!

  24. Hmmm. I’m stumped. Love that red barn, though!

  25. I’m thinking part donKey and part Shetland pony if that’s possible! The barn is wonderful!

  26. I’m cracking up at Veronica’s comment. She seems cool. Of course your post is wonderful, but then it always is.

  27. Do you suppose it’s a pony/donkey cross?? Love the barn…

  28. I was noticing the poor thing’s hooves/legs. I wondered what was wrong, obviously your readers are very knowledgeable! I hope someone gets them some help.

  29. Pretty red barn! My hubby thinks your mystery animal might be an Icelandic Horse. They are small and compact and are shaggy. If not that, then a similar breed to the Icelandic. Letting that poor things hooves get in that condition is animal cruelty, if you ask me. There’s no excuse for neglect like that.

  30. Love the barn, no idea about the animal. Wasn’t raised on a farm, so if it isn’t a horse or cow, I don’t have a guess as to what type of mix it could be. But you’ll have to post if you get a definite answer. ~ Sheila

  31. In my opinion, that pony or burrow is foundered and neglected and the owner should be reported to the animal rights/welfare people or some law enforcement agency. It just ticks me off to no end to see such cruel situations animals have to survive because some mean human chooses to let it happen. 😦
