Cylinder Head 1: Motor Man 0

Yesterday morning, I had an early appointment in Hampton. As I was walking back to my car after the appointment, I called Motor Man to let him know I was heading home. As soon as he said: “Hello?”, I asked him what was wrong.

He sputtered: “I almost cut off the end of my finger. I’m on my way to St. Luke’s!” (an urgent care facility about five miles from our shop). And yes, he was driving himself. Needless to say, the twenty minutes it took me to drive there from Hampton felt like two hours.

He had been working in our machine shop, setting up a cylinder head (which weighs about 60 pounds) to be surfaced. The jack under the head slipped, causing the head to fall on his hand.

We returned to the scene later in the day, and he demonstrated what happened. In this picture, he’s pushing back the cylinder head, which is attached to the machine. The head wasn’t this high up when it slipped, but his hand was caught between the head and that “ledge” where the wrench is.

He has a tiny break in the bone at the tip of his finger, and a laceration which required four stitches.

Once we returned home, Nurse Sundae conducted a cat scan.

After pain meds:

(What a guy: posing for blog pictures after the trauma of the day.)

Later today, he has an appointment with an orthopedic specialist regarding the broken bone, which, hopefully, won’t require surgery. We realize this could have been much worse, and we’re so thankful that it wasn’t.

Oh – and I did take a picture of his finger while we were at urgent care (with my cell phone), but I’ll spare you that image……

  4. YIKES….OUCH….sure hope the orthopedic surgeon says JR’s finger will be fine without surgery. I bet that hurt like the dickens – he’s a brave boy – having you two pretty nurses (you and of course Sundae!) waiting on him hand and foot was just what the doctor ordered! Hope all is well and that finger heals up PERFECTLY (and soon!).

    Hugs, Pam (and Sam)

  5. Oh no. I hope Motor Man will feel better real soon and the broken bone is not serious.
I am sure Nurse Sundae will be the best nurse ever!

  8. Poor Motor Man! I’m so grateful it wasn’t any worse. He really is quite a guy. I know you and Sundae are the best nurses he could every ask for!

  9. Owie! Hope no surgery is required and glad he is doing ok. Sundae conducted a cat scan” Laughing here.. 🙂 Looks like Sundae is being very thorough.

  10. Oh my–and he drove himself to the clinic? What a guy! Good to see his humor was in tact and he was up to facing the camera. “cat scan” lol…:)

  11. Cat scans are wonderful things especially administered by such a beautiful kitty. So sorry for the accident. Is a card appropriate? LOL

  12. I agree – what a guy, posing for all those pictures at a time like that! Even demonstrating how he injured his finger! What a sport. I hope you both had a good night’s sleep and his finger didn’t throb too much. Let us know how his doctor’s appointment goes, please!

  13. Wow! Its a good thing he did not lose the end of his finger! And yes Cat Scans help no matter what happens!

  16. Omigooseness, be careful, Motor Man! I hope the CAT scan was helpful…

  17. Could’ve been much worse .. but when he started making jokes at the clinic, I knew things would be alright. & I’m sure the follow up CAT scan helped!

  18. Ouch! Sorry to hear of Motor Man’s lacerated/broken finger. It hurts to think about it! And he drove himself?! Good thing you have a home health care cat! TLC is very important! Praying for a speedy healing.

Thank God Motor Man is ok and you made it safely to him. I know what you mean about how long it seem to take to get to him. Give him our best.

  20. Accidents happen SO quickly, even when one is trying to be careful. I worry about working with the farm machinery. It will be interesting to see if the doctor and Sundae get the same results from their tests.

  21. Oh, my gosh! Ouch!! I’m really glad Motor Man is okay though and this wasn’t worse. Hope the broken bone heals fine and nothing else needs to be endured. How sweet of Sundae to give MM some TLC (totally loving cat) therapy. 😉

  22. He’s an awesome sport that Motor Man – posing for pic’s an all. Heal fast big guy.

  23. I almost didn’t hit the ‘like’ button, because I don’t like what happened to Motor Man. But I do like his sporting attitude and good luck in being able to keep his finger. My grandfather and one uncle were woodworkers and their fingers kept turning into nubs. And I like nurse ‘Sundae’. She’s doing a fine job.

  24. Poor Motor Man…hope he heals quickly. AND, I have to say, his machine shop looks much cleaner than my brother’s here at Napa. Speaking of Napa, I spy a picture of our race car in the background 🙂
p.s. Had to giggle at the “cat scan”
