Our Penny Date

Monday (Labor Day), Motor Man and I had no plans. So I thought it would be fun to try an idea I’d heard about some time back: a penny date. Here are the rules:

1. Grab a penny
2. Let your date choose a number between 1 and 20*. This will be the number of times you flip the penny.
3. Pull out of the driveway and begin. Heads is right. Tails is left.
4. Every time you come to an intersection, flip the penny and turn in the corresponding direction.
5. Once you get to the number, stop. Look around. Make a date where you are.

We began at our shop, and I asked Motor Man to pick a number between 1 and 20.  Ever the romantic, he chose 2. (Our wedding date was 02-02-02.)  Okay….

He flipped the penny, and it landed on heads, so we took a right.  At the first intersection, he flipped it again, and we took another right.  That landed us on the bypass behind our shop. …where there is absolutely nothing except woodland and fields for several miles.

So we had a laugh and just kept driving.

Of course, we eventually made a turn and began our adventure down some back roads in our county.  We stopped for a picture of this old house.  It was the home many years ago of  a country physician named Dr. Ward.  My grandparents were living nearby when my mom was born (1910) and used his name as my mother’s middle name. My mom, in turn, used it for mine. I’m glad his home has been restored.

We also rode by this old (supposedly haunted) building.  No one seems to know what it was actually used for in its day, but it’s one of those places that begs to be photographed no matter how often you pass it. And it seems that it’s deteriorated a little more each time.

The sky was perfect for pictures. We passed by cornfields, some having been partially harvested.

Motor Man was told yesterday that the corn crop is so plentiful this year, some farmers are having difficulty finding places to store it.

“I’ve never been on this road before. Wonder where it goes?” (Turns out, it was a dead end.)

So our penny date turned into a ride in the country on a beautiful day.

*While researching penny dates for this post, another version suggests having your date choose a number between 10 and 20.

We may try that next time, but Motor Man’s reason for choosing the number 2, in itself, made our penny date special.
