My Random Five Friday was all written and scheduled for this morning. But I’m just not in the mood for a frivolous post today.

Yesterday, Virginia lost her second State Trooper in the past thirty-three days.

Without getting into politics,  let me just say that I’m angry, I’m sad and I’m frightened. And I’m sure those feelings are shared by many.

I’m angry that respect for authority, whether it’s for parents, school teachers, bus drivers or the police, seems to be something no longer taught to our young people.

I’m sad that there’s a young widow (not too terribly far from us) who has lost her love,  two children who have lost their dad, and extended family members who are also grieving.  I woke up several times last night, and that young woman, unknown to me, was the first thought I had.  Those of us who have ever lost a relative, especially suddenly and unexpectedly,  know that the first night is the most painful.

And I’m frightened that our police officers have become more of a target than they have ever been.

Motor Man and I count, among our friends and acquaintances, six retired Virginia State Troopers, and three who are currently with the department.  It’s no wonder that last night,  when I logged on to Facebook, I saw this sad image again and again.

I debated whether to publish this post today; it certainly is not my intent to use this officer’s death in any way other than to show respect.  We are thankful for his service, and his family will continue to be in our thoughts.
