Poetic Thursday: The Milk Man

Welcome to another ‘issue’ of Poetic Thursday with Pam, Teddy and Angel Sammy at Two Spoiled Cats.

This is the nostalgic photo they provided for our inspiration this week:

And  here’s my poem:

The Milk Man

For those folks who lived in the city,
a milk man made daily deliveries.

That’s hard to imagine for a country girl like myself;
we bought our milk from a grocery store shelf.

He greeted everyone as he made his rounds;
and probably knew all the gossip about town.

Sometimes, there was a bonus  for stopping by:
a  slice of nice, warm cherry pie.

It’s nice to look back on such an idyllic time;
smiles, good manners and no worries about crime.

Did you ever have home delivery of milk?

  1. Sweet poem!! Milk delivery was something I only saw on TV. Now as anything old fascinates me, I have severale milk bottles and two milk carriers. You never know when you know you might need them! 😊

  2. Oh yes we sure did have home delivery……and that memory and many others I have are of a kinder, more gentle time……….

  3. Yes!!! We lived on a farm in the country. When Dad stopped milking the cow, the Colony Milk Farm truck drove up in the back yard and delivered our milk. We thought that was the most special thing. Yes, it was a kinder, more gentle – more innocent – time.

  4. When we were first married we had milk delivery twice a week. Kept the milk box on the front stoop. When I was growing up my mother would ask me to go down the road to the family who had cows and I would get a quart of milk for dinner. She always skimmed the cream off the top for future baking. Good memories.

  5. Another great one ! He should pop the top off a bottle of milk – have something to go with that pie ; )

    We never had a milkman but many farms that provided wonderful and fresh products. So happy I grew up in the country. Many fond memories. Dianna, another great poem.

  7. Those were good memories.

  8. I remember having milk delivered when we lived out in the country! To this day, I still think it was the best tasting milk.

  9. I don’t know how you do it but you always come up with a great poem for each picture! That takes talent. We lived in the country when I was growing up too but we actually did have milk delivered to our porch. It came in glass bottles too.

  10. No home deliveries for us, unless it was straight from the cow!!
