Poetic Thursday: Your Haunting

Today, as I do every week, I’m participating in Poetic Thursday with my friend, Pam, and her boys at Two Spoiled Cats.

This is the photo we were given last week as inspiration for today’s poem:

And here’s my poem:

Your Haunting

A shadowy figure among the trees?
Perhaps, but, more likely one of these:

An aroma from the days when you were a child.
A song from your teens when you bordered on wild.

An opportunity not taken, and therefore, missed.
That someone you should (or shouldn’t) have kissed.

A word that was spoken but shouldn’t have been
that led to the loss of a long-time friend.

A dream you dreamed but set aside,
that perfect shell washed away by the tide.

Your hauntings are there if you take a good look.
They’re the pages, the chapters in your book.

Though they may be safely tucked away,
they’re your memories, your story, your yesterdays.

  1. So interesting what photos bring to mind isn’t it…..yes there are many kinds of hauntings and as we age we accumulate more of them in our “memory file”. I had a feeling this photo would evoke a variety of poems and thoughts and so far from what I’ve seen I was right! Thanks for being a poetry partner with us………

  4. Dianna!! Girl, you are an amazing poet! These photos really bring out your creativity. I think this is the best one so far…and they’ve all been good. 🙂

  5. A superb exercise in metaphor .. I think this might be my favorite poem of yours.. no, that’s not a person out there, it’s something so much more .. perfect lines for today’s weather, by the way.

  6. What a picture of how our thoughts suddenly take us back to the past as well as our longings to change the past. You need to find a publisher!!
