The Shot I’ve Been Waiting For

Most of you have “met” Groom Swan through this blog, and know of his habit of coming ashore from time to time.

These pictures were taken the morning before Hurricane Irene. Motor Man was securing our old boat to the cedar tree in case of a severe high tide, which thankfully didn’t happen.

I think I’ve mentioned that, occasionally, Groom Swan will stretch out his neck and “honk” at the same time. My neighbor and I disagree about the reason he does this. My neighbor thinks he’s being mean, but I think it’s just his way of greeting me. I’ve never been able to get a picture of him doing this….until the morning Motor Man was out by the boat.

And now, here’s the shot I’ve been waiting for:

Seconds later, he was back to his normal stance.

Are there any swan experts out there? Maybe you could settle this little matter.

I really hope I don’t learn that he IS being mean. I much prefer believing that it’s just his way of saying: “Hi, how are you? What’s new? Got bread?”

  1. I’m sure groom swan is only saying ‘good mornin’ to you.

  2. I agree…he would never be aggressive/mean to you. After all, he’s smart enough not to ‘bite the hand’ that feeds him!!

  3. If it’s morning surely he is stretching and yawning.

  4. I’m no goose expert but sounds like he’s saying “hello” and “what do you have for me to eat today?” to me! 🙂

  5. My vote goes for you, Dianna! You two have a special bond and he is merely greeting you each day!

  6. Oh I agree with everyone else – he knows you and Motor Man and is just making sure you know he’s available for a handout!!

  7. Let’s hope he’s greeting you! He looks big enough to take a chunk out of your leg!

  8. Glad you finally got your shot – I can almost hear it! That looks like a swan “Hi! How the heck are ya and where’s the bread?” greeting if I ever saw one. One of my horses looks about like that when he’s screamin’ for food too (it’s pitiful).

  9. That’s crazy! I’ve never seen a swan’s neck in any other position than curved to half a heart! … I know nothing about swans, but maybe it’s alergies??!! I mean that’s what I sound like in the morning every spring and fall!

  10. what a great shot!!!!!

  11. gorgeous….i love the “stretchey” shot of your friend!!!

  12. I’m no swan expert, but If he goes through the trouble to come up into the yard to hang out, all the while knowing it’s tough to eat bread off the grass, then he’s saying “What’s up?? Take a picture or two if you’d like!! But don’t forget that bread!”

  13. That is a fantastic shot, Dianna! Groom Swan’s a good-looking fella.

  14. Great photos. We don’t have swans in North Alabama, so I don’t know much about them. I spent the summer on Cape Cod once and there were swans there, so beautiful!

  15. That is awesome! He is beautiful, thanks for sharing its my first time here I’ll be back 🙂

  16. Too funny. We all know he’s talking to you. He knows you’re patiently waiting with your camera and he’s ready to show you his stuff! I can’t believe how gorgeous he is…I’ve never seen a black swan!

  17. What a great pose–worth waiting for. And all you had to do was send Motor Man outside. I wonder if the swan was also giving him advice about how to avoid further injury. Oh, this was BEFORE the “incident,” wasn’t it?

  18. Groom Swan is so handsome and has such a long neck. Great shot Dianna! It’s a peach! 🙂

  19. Gorgeous picture – regal one moment and in action in another! Keep us updated on what you are able to discern about his communication. By the way, I’m betting he’s just happy to see you!

  20. WHEN GEESE DO THAT IT MEANS GET OUT OF MY TERRITORY OR I’M GOING TO PECK YOU SOMEWHERE. I DON’T KNOW IF IT IS THE SAME FOR SWANS.

I am sure he’s just greeting you and asking “where the bread”.

  22. “If you don’t quit taking pictures of me I’m going to stretch your neck out on the chopping block like THIS!”
