For those of you who aren’t from ’round here, and aren’t familiar with OBX, I’ll explain. Several years ago, a very imaginative person created “OBX” as an abbreviation for the Outer Banks of North Carolina. That person is probably very wealthy, considering all the OBX decals, bumper stickers, key chains, magnets, and even North Carolina license plates bearing those letters.
Anyway….Motor Man and I were at/in the OBX last week, and on Sunday, we began our day by watching the sunrise from the beach. See the little sandpiper in the far right corner? He and several of his buddies were putting on a show for us, searching for breakfast while avoiding the surf.
There were a few other folks on the beach, even at that early hour. We laughed at this black lab. He was playing “catch” with a ball and the waves. He would drop the ball and watch it roll toward the water, then crouch down like a cat and wait for the surf to bring it back to him.
We also met a really nice family from Pennsylvania on their first vacation to OBX. Well, we “sort of” met them: we don’t actually know their names. Their little girls were having fun finding seashells and building sand castles.
Their Mom was kind enough to take a picture of us.
It was so beautiful, I couldn’t stop taking pictures.
Motor Man had to drag me away….kicking and screaming. Just one more…just one more! (I’m kidding, of course.)
Seriously, if you’re ever on the Outer Banks, the sunrise is worth getting up at o-dark thirty to witness. Yes, Susie, that means you, too.

Oh wow, look at the ball of fire in the sky – amazing. Great pictures, looks and sounds absolutely lovely. Thanks for sharing. That’s another place to add to my list of places I’d like to visit (and probably will never get to lol).
Just lovely…. thanks for sharing. Don’t we live in a totally beautiful world with so many places to enjoy with the people we love?
So gorgeous….those magical sunrises and sunsets on the water are the most soothing types of photos to take – as you well know! The kinds of moments we like to recall in the dead of winter…. 🙂

LOVE the game that dog created for himself! I’ll have to tell my son-in-law. He’ll love it too.
The pictures of the OBX are beautiful but the ones from your back yard are just as beautiful!
Beautiful photos of, as we used to call it, Nags Head! The sunrises are spectacular.
wow. the grasses one is just spectacular!!! thanks for educating us on OBX!
What fun! My husband *would* have to literally drag me away cause that light you were getting was GORGEOUS! The shot of you and Motor Man is just fantastic and the pink glow on the water is amazing!!
One last thing: that lab game sounds super cute…smart dog.
Be still my heart! These are beautiful….I really, really, need a trip to the beach.
Signed,
Stuck On The Prairie….
beautiful, fun pictures. I hope you frame the one of you & Motor Man! 🙂 MJ
Another great series.. No shortage of them!! I’m starting to wonder if y’all follow sunrises, or if the sunrises follow y’all! The one with the partial fence and single piece of grass is my fave…
OBX is a beautiful place. Chuck and I enjoy going down there. Love the pictures. The one of you and J,R. is wonderful.
P.S. Thanks for Lona’s address, sending off a card this weekend.
One word…beautiful!!

you sure are a “sunrisey” girl!! and you look great at such a weeee hour!
Beautiful photos of a beautiful place!
You did get some beautiful pictures, Dianna. We stayed at the Va. Beach oceanfront once (back when I got up early) and the sunrise was spectacular, especially the reflection on the water that looked like a golden pathway.
Awesome photos. I love the beach, but I’ve never been to one in North Carolina. Your photos and stories of the day made me feel like I went on a mini vacation with you here on your blog. Thanks so much for sharing your fun and pleasant trip. 🙂
Gorgeous photos. Thanks for the trip to the beach!
Dianna,
My only regret on the road trip we recently took out west, was not getting up early to see more sunrises. I, like you, enjoy seeing the way morning light hits the landscape. Your pictures are lovely!
