On our way to and from the Outer Banks, we pass by a small pasture with a little stable and a resident white horse. We don’t know how old this horse is, but it’s been there for years and years. As a little greeting, Motor Man will beep the horn as we pass by.
To simplify things, I named this horse “White Cloud”. I’ve never really “noticed” whether it was a boy horse or a girl horse. After looking at these pictures, I’m thinking maybe it’s a girl. But since my knowledge of horses is practically nil, allow me to move on to safe territory and explain the name:
(My first niece was born when I was five. When we were little girls, I had an imaginary friend, named Jewlsie. My niece had an imaginary horse, named White Cloud. I always thought having an imaginary horse was a bit silly, but I made allowances, because after all, she WAS just a child.)
Sunday, as we were passing by, White Cloud was out in the pasture. Motor Man pulled over on the shoulder of the highway.
I put down my window and said hi. White Cloud began to walk toward us.
And then, White Cloud started talking back to me. Well, actually, it was more of a snort. But it seemed to be a greeting.
Or maybe White Cloud was saying: “Hi, do you have any food?”. When I said no, the conversation seemed to be over.
Bye for now, White Cloud! Maybe next time, we’ll bring you some treats. And we’ll visit a little longer.
Linking up to Friday’s Fences.

White Cloud is quite beautiful no matter WHAT his/her age may be…..looks healthy and happy and well fed but I bet an apple wouldn’t be turned down next time you pass by! 😉 Lovely photos…..I think White Cloud is the PERFECT name…….

That is so funny Dianne! I have been seeing that same horse for more years than I can remember as well! He must be in his 20’s, I swear! It will be a sad day when we pass that field and its empty!
It took me a moment to see the barbed wire fence – I was wondering why she didn’t just walk past the other rail fence!
White Cloud is a good name for either …. certainly seem to be an inquisitive one anyways 🙂

Beautiful horse ~ And White Cloud fits! You wonder how kids come up with the imaginary stuff like that name for an imaginary horse friend. My imaginary friends were Carsin Gin-Gin and Dr. Ink….go figure….
white cloud is beautiful. what a great name! such lovely shots. (:
I love the fact that Motor Man beeps the horn when you drive by:) These are wonderful pictures. White Cloud is very photogenic!!
AS to the photos, the horse is beautiful and I love the views! As for the imaginary friend, I never had one…I just had a pesky younger brother! But my sister did…she was 21 years younger than me, so she needed one!
I’m so glad you pulled over
wonderful shots of a beautiful horse
when I first saw your name on the links I thought I had misspelled mine 🙂
another member of the ‘double n club’ as my niece calls it
Doesn’t every pre-teen girl want a horse? So I guess having an imaginary one is better than none! Bet White Cloud thought it was about time those people stopped and said hello since I see them riding by so often!
White Cloud. I love that you named her. And I love that MM honks when you all drive by. I love the continuity of your friendly world.
What a sweet story….such a part of your drive…White Cloud will be missed one day!
what a beautiful name for such a beautiful horse!!
Enjoyed reading through several of your posts. I am a horse-lover, dh and I love to travel AND we eat oatmeal for breakfast!! (My cholesterol is borderline.) Honored you liked my card on SCS, thanks for your comment and happy anniversary! 🙂
she’s a pretty one! yes, you definitely need to pack some carrots next time!
It looks to me that she watches for you as much as you watch for her. Maybe she has an imaginary human as well…….
We see White Cloud all the time too and I always felt sorry for him because he’s always all by himself. Not a person or horse or other animal around. Horses are pack animals! Poor boy…or girl? By the way…they like apples and carrots!
This is a sweet story, with a pretty horse starring. 🙂
The horse acts like it knows you…or wants to know you. 🙂
Perfect name … she / he must’ve heard about all the other animals y’all are friends with !! … or maybe that you feed a lot of them 😉
What a beautiful creature. I think White Cloud is a perfect name 🙂
White Cloud knows a good friend when she sees one! Of course, she’ll really be your friend if you bring her a carrot next time you visit. 😉
White Cloud is a great name for this beautiful horse! She really seems friendly and definitely was looking for a treat.
Have a great weekend!
What a charming story and how much fun it is to be on the lookout for White Cloud when you drive by. She’d probably love a carrot or apple if you had one handy next time. Not too long ago I watched a program on Nature on PBS about some wild horse herds. Think one was named White Cloud by the photographers/reporters.
Nice post…seems like every time I am out and there is a horse, it is expecting a handout…and I don’t have anything. But I just love how they ‘talk’ to us.
I have a sheep farm down the street, and I always stop to say hello. They are great neighbors.
White Cloud is a magnificent beast. Wow, you’re photos of him/her are so fun and charming.
I love the story of your niece. So, cute. I love kid logic. 😉
Awww, I am so happy you stopped. I am sure a treat would not be turned down 🙂
nice series of photos
White Cloud’s pictures are great. Maybe he remembered the sound of your horn and wanted to meet you in person.
Such a sweet post. You are definitely an animal lover. It is so dear the way you have named the horse and on your trips you look forward to seeing him. Nice photos. genie
Perfect name for a beautiful horse. I’m glad you have these touchstones along the way that make even the long drive seem like fun.
