Barn Charm – And One Cow

Last month, on our fall foliage trip to the mountains, we came upon this beautiful, but scary-looking barn near Harrisonburg.

Not seeing a “No trespassing” sign, we ventured up the driveway. Well, Motor Man ventured: Marshall and I were just along for the ride.

This end of the barn was in REALLY bad shape.

This was the side that is visible from the highway. It is a huge barn, and there’s something in this picture that you probably won’t notice right away.

As we drove up, one cow emerged from opening under the barn. (The picture is a little blurred; I cropped it to make him easier to see.) Was he curious? Or hoping we were bringing food?

The opposite side of the barn appears to be in somewhat better condition.

This is definitely one of the more interesting barns in my Barn Charm collection.

Linking up to Barn Charm.

  1. Wow…at first look that place appears to be held up by the termites holding hands BUT maybe it’s not in bad shape “all over”……it really is HUGE. I guess if it’s occupied by at least one cow it can’t be all bad! Great photos….

  2. Rick used to do that – just drive up to a place (in the country) and I’d feel like we were trespassing. Sometimes he’d even go right up to the door and knock. Was I ever surprised when I found out he knew the people! Ohhh…he made me nervous. Not so much anymore. Over the years, now I know who he knows. 🙂

  3. It sure is interesting! That cow looks pretty well fed so I bet SOMEONE is coming around to feed him

  4. Now that’s my kind of people… just enter and when some one appears, ask if the place belongs to the Kilwolskis… if they know the Kilwolskis, ask if it’s spelt with a I or a Y whichever they choose, your looking for the other…Love the photos by the way.. and the cow is tagged so it’s being looked after, so any thoughts of beef on the hoof… out the door..

  5. It is a pretty spooky looking barn. It’s like Jekyll and Hyde!

  6. I sincerely hope the owner has taken steps to secure the side where the cows was so that it doesn’t collapse… I just cringe every time I see livestock inside these old falling down barns! She’s a beauty, but I hope it doesn’t hurt them =0

    Thanks for joining =)

  7. That’s a happy cow.
I agree with sweet days, it’s spooky, perfect for a horror film.

  8. Definitely a ragged barn! I sure have missed every one…hope to be back online soon…

  9. I bet this was a magnificent barn in it’s day!

  10. I am amazed that they are still using the barn! Well, at least old Bossy was using the barn…

  11. i hope it holds on.

  12. There must be more cows somewhere or she wouldn’t need a tag on her ear!

  13. It won’t last too many more winters in that kind of shape! Interesting photos!

  14. One of the more interesting finds that day … I would’ve liked to have seen it before it suffered all the damage 😦 I’ve never seen a watch-cow before, either, but those eyes were on us !!

It’s good you could get pictures all around the barn, it shows the real feel of the barn. The watch cow is just a added bonus!

  16. I think that cow’s just fine. There’s a lot of hay stored in that barn.

  17. So much character in this one. Kudos to Motot Man for hanging in there.

  18. I love your Barn Charm charmers. This one has real character and I would love to know its history.

  19. It’s hard to imagine that is the same barn in all the photos. Nice find–and the cow is a bonus.

  20. What a fascinating barn! It looks like it was added to several times, just anyhow. It does look like it could be the setting for a horror film, with the cow there to lure you in……
