We All Scream For Ice Cream

Yesterday, Motor Man and I had several errands to run in Norfolk. Whenever we’re in the area, we stop for lunch at a legendary restaurant known as Doumar’s.

Doumar’s, famous for barbecue and ice cream cones, opened in 1907 as a little ice cream stand at Ocean View Amusement Park in Norfolk. It was destroyed by a hurricane in 1933,  and the family relocated the business to its current location in 1934.

Abe Doumar is said to have created the first ice cream cone from a waffle at the World’s Fair in St. Louis in 1904. The cones were such a hit that, in 1905,  Abe designed and had an ice cream cone baking machine built. Today his nephew, Albert, still bakes cones on that same machine.

Motor Man and I met Al Doumar yesterday. He’s 91 years young. When we asked if we could have our picture taken with him, he graciously agreed. Another customer volunteered to take the photo, and Mr. Doumar wanted her to be sure to get the sign for the machine in the picture.

In 2002, Doumar’s received the Gourmet Magazine Award for the best ice cream cones in the U.S.

In 2008,  Doumar’s was featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. This clip shares more history and many old photos of the Doumar family and the restaurant.

Yesterday was an almost spring-like February day: just perfect for a Doumar’s ice cream cone.

  2. Oh what fun! Mr. Doumar looks like quite a character and he’s obviously proud of his considerable accomplishment in inventing the cone. Bravo – as a long-time fan of a good ice cream cone I can totally appreciate what he did then – AND now! Great photos……

  3. What a happy and delightful gentlemen he looks to be. Can you imagine being so spry and cheerful at 91. That’s so awesome you & MM met such a fun historical figure. I’d want to thank him for giving us a way to enjoy ice cream most anywhere. Thank you for sharing this. It’s a wonderful way to begin the day. 🙂

  4. Mr. Doumar can be rightfully proud of his machine. Imagine, to have had such a fun uncle.

  5. What a story and so neat you got to meet him — he looks completely at ease in the photo. That turquoise is your color, Dianna 🙂

Chuck and I go to Doumar’s as much as we can, we love it! We have spoke to Al a few times over the years and he is a wonderful person. After seeing the cones what do you want to bet Chuck and I will be taking a trip to Doumar’s soon!

  9. Oh Wow! A new place to add to my bucket list!

  10. I’d heard the name Doumars when I was volunteering at church one day, but didn’t know anything about it. This was great, especially the video. I can’t wait to tell George and have him take me there!

  11. I LOVE ice cream. My dad used to take us out for a cone even in times when we had to search the couch cushions for dimes. Those memories make the taste even sweeter.

  12. Um…Yum! What a great story! So neat that you got to meet this fellow and so cute that he wanted the sign in the photo. The ice cream looks delicious and I’m just a tad jealous of your beautiful spring day, she said, while looking out the window watching snow flurries. 😉
