“L” As In Yellow

Today, for Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop, I chose this prompt:
2.) Write an entry inspired by the word: Yellow

When I hear the word yellow, one memory immediately comes to mind. Marshall will probably know exactly what today’s post is when he sees the title.

When Marshall was around ten years old, I would occasionally baby-sit “L’, the daughter of a friend of mine. “L”  was a toddler at the time, and had difficulty making the sound of the letter “Y”,  so when she said the word yellow, she pronounced it  “lellow”.

One day when she was staying with us, Marshall and I decided that we were going to have a little lesson to help “L”  say yellow. Marshall and I began by saying to her: “L”, say YAY!”. And we clapped our hands while saying “YAY!”. So “L” did the same. Then we said: “Say, YAY-YELLOW”!

To which, “L”  said: “YAY-LELLOW”.

“L” soon learned to say yellow, she grew up, got married on our lawn, and she and her groom drove away in our little lellow car.

  1. Too cute!! Love that car!

  2. Now that story is definitely yellow. (Smiling)

  3. I would love to think that “L” will see this blog. She would get a real kick out of it. And not many brides and grooms get to ride away from their wedding in a ’32 Vicky!

  4. Love it! How great to be able to host the wedding of a life-time friend! …both telling yellow stories today 🙂

  5. Super, super cute story Dianna and I totally love that she’s barefooted! OH my. Just wonderful.

  6. Cute story. Laura also called it lellow for a long time and we still say lellow sometimes for old times sake.

  7. I agree, cute story. I do not like yellow cars–my dad used to have one. Guess I just think Taxi’s are yellow so my car shouldn’t be.

  8. oh how cute! love her little bare foot sticking out of that car… 🙂

  9. Enjoyed your post. I lived in Brazil for a while and had the darnedest time pronouncing the Portuguese word for yellow. So I avoided saying it, if at all possible.

I didn’t write about yellow, but the first thing I thought of was visiting NY City 40 years ago and bumping into a friend on the street filming yellow things —taxi’s, school buses, stop lights. He produced & directed “Dirt! the movie” which was shown on PBS for Earth Day 2010.

  10. I sure did … I knew exactly what this post was about when I read the title! We still bring it up sometimes, too ! And what an awesome lellow car you have ……..

  11. What a great story! Love that she rode away in the lellow car!

  12. Aww, my nephews all had a hard time with yellow. Who knew such a simple, cute word could be such a challenge for little ones? I LOVE that ‘lellow car and good call on her getting married in your yard – it’s such a beautiful setting!

  13. I love that car. Now that is how yellow should be used 🙂

My girls both had issues with yellow. Thankfully, it cleared up. Life would be finny if pronunciation was never corrected 🙂

  14. Great post and memories. That is how Andrew said yellow for a long time. Must be a kiddie thing. I always think of bananas which brings back memories of my Dad, Mom and brother. Dad liked them green, my brother liked them rotten, and my Mom hated them. I still have a fake banana my brother stuffed with pennies for me. Personal memories, but yellow brings that out in me.
