This Is Summer

(Just a note to let you know that I won’t be posting entries this weekend. Summer’s rather busy right now in my little corner of the world. Be sure to tune in Monday to read about our latest adventure!)

Our area, like so many others, is in the midst of a heat wave (heat index yesterday was 107).  So time spent outside recently has been very limited, most of it early in the morning to water plants and flowers.

We have the three H’s going on right now: hazy, hot and humid. The day begins with the sun struggling to burn through the haze. (Believe me, the struggle ends shortly thereafter.)

If you haven’t spent any time during the summer in the South, you may not be familiar with crape myrtles. These trees (there are also shrub varieties) seem to thrive in the hot weather, and they bloom almost all summer. There are many colors: pinks, reds, purples and white. We have a purple one in our yard.

I did manage to stay outside long enough Wednesday to catch this blazing sunset.

It’s definitely summer.
