This Is Summer

(Just a note to let you know that I won’t be posting entries this weekend. Summer’s rather busy right now in my little corner of the world. Be sure to tune in Monday to read about our latest adventure!)

Our area, like so many others, is in the midst of a heat wave (heat index yesterday was 107).  So time spent outside recently has been very limited, most of it early in the morning to water plants and flowers.

We have the three H’s going on right now: hazy, hot and humid. The day begins with the sun struggling to burn through the haze. (Believe me, the struggle ends shortly thereafter.)

If you haven’t spent any time during the summer in the South, you may not be familiar with crape myrtles. These trees (there are also shrub varieties) seem to thrive in the hot weather, and they bloom almost all summer. There are many colors: pinks, reds, purples and white. We have a purple one in our yard.

I did manage to stay outside long enough Wednesday to catch this blazing sunset.

It’s definitely summer.

  1. I have spent some time in the south in the summer, not much but enough to know that looks HOT even that early in the morning! It’s like trying to breathe water. Stay cool, can’t wait too see what you’ve been up to come Monday!

  2. We have the three H’s here, too! It’s hard to have energy to do anything! I love the color of your crape myrtle – ours is a deep pink. Try to stay cool this weekend!

  3. Crape Myrtles always mean ‘summer’ to me as well as the “high-drangeas”!! We have white and deep pink C. M. here at the apartments. We also have several beautiful tulip magnolia trees. Last year they bloomed 3 times!!
Recognize your 3-H’s but add 3-B’s–broiling/baking, boiling heat!!

  4. It’s very humid here also even with the drought. And crape myrtles are blooming. I would say our coastal areas have a few things in common.

  5. Beautiful. We are having the same weather here in NC. It has been miserable all week. I’m ready for a cool down…at least to 90!

  6. the sunset is beautiful. my poor crape myrtles have barely eeked out a bloom this year. i can’t water them enough to get the buds to open before they dry up and fall off… maybe next year…

  7. Beautiful pics.
Yesterday our high temp was 100. I could hardly breathe when I went outside. We’re not used to this in Michigan!

  8. I don’t know what’s prettier – your Crape Myrtle or that sunset! 🙂 Have a great weekend .. it’s hot and steamy here in West Michigan, too.

    Cheers! MJ

  9. oooooohhhhh it’s just so hot everywhere. gorgeous sunset!!!

  10. My crepe myrtle has just bloomed…deep pink, almost red! Maybe we’ll get a break from this heat soon!!

  11. Hazy, Hot and Humid reminds me of my mom listening to the weather on her little transistor radio every morning in the kitchen….summer would always bring that forcast! Enjoy your weekend!

  12. Hi Dianne…returning the visit you made to my cat’s blog today….love your photos – what beautiful views of the water! Sundae is precious…..looks like a cat after Sam’s heart – a fellow spoiled cat perhaps? LOL Very nice to meet you……….Pam

  13. Love the purple crepe myrtle! And it’s shaped so pretty too. I feel as though I’m about to have a melt down in this heat! It’s just draining me.

  14. It is definitely summer! Our power went off briefly this morning. A niece and I went to lunch, and it was so hot in the house when I got home. Turns out the breaker had tripped on the a/c…sadly, it took me an hour to figure that out…I just thought it was such a hot day. Hopefully, I’ve learned that lesson. Have a great weekend!

How did we make it when we were growning up in Surry and Bacon’s Castle???? Front porches and fans I guess!!!! Now I need a/c to keep me going. Times changes.

I love crepe myrtle trees. My grandmother Matthews and Uncle had some on our place. It seemed to me growing up they did not bloom until end of July first of August. Now they bloom from June thru August. Maybe that has changed too.
