You may recall that my niece, Donna and her son, Connor, visited us a couple of weeks ago. One afternoon, shortly after we’d returned home from an outing, Connor went outside. He hurried back in to tell me that Groom Swan was there.
Motor Man says that he fully expects Groom Swan to ring the doorbell one day when he tires of waiting for me to come out with bread.
On this particular day, I handed the camera to Connor and attempted to have Groom swan take the bread from my hand. He did that a couple of times a few years ago, but hasn’t done it recently. Right after Connor took the next picture, Groom Swan did take the bread from my hand. But he did it so quickly, that Connor didn’t have a chance to get a picture. And of course, Groom Swan wouldn’t do it again.
So Groom Swan training will continue.
Wow I think that’s the biggest swan I’ve seen! Ellie
He does look HUGE when he’s out of the water!
He knows where to come for the BEST handouts in town though! Have you seen the Bride lately?
Pam
Yes, Pam – she’s been there regularly! She just doesn’t come UP TO THE HOUSE like Groom does!
Do they bite?
My aunt and uncle had geese (white farmyard geese) and they were mean, chased us kids and bit us.
You’re braver than me!!
MJ
He’s very gentle, MJ. I think it scares him when he takes the bread from me more than it does me! Bride Swan is more “skiddish” and doesn’t want to be quite as close as Groom Swan does. Have a good day!
good to know … and nice to know he’s gentle. Awww…
Bride and Groom swan know the hand that feeds them. But Groom swan is more adventurous! I think they’ve decided they have a special home there.
The nice thing about having a neck that long is that he doesn’t have to get THAT close to you;) Love all the pics, Connor did a great job! The first pic looks as if Connor and Groom Swan are having a conversation:)
It’s so fun having them back! That is a BIG bird!!! Good Morning Dianna!
What a thrill for Connor!
Better than geese!! Connor is the photographer in training. Good job, Connor.
Honk! He is getting incredibly close to domestication — next thing we’ll see is a pic of him and Sundae sharing a sunny spot together in your home.
Love these photos! Nice to have an assistant on hand! ~ Sheila
he is so handsome! he’s certainly got YOU trained. 🙂
That’s what I was thinking : ” Who’s training who ?? ” !!
He looks right at home on land !!
I can not get over that Groom Swain comes right up to your door!. I agree with JR, he will be ringing the door bell soon. He is a big beautiful swan, that’s for sure.
Wow he is so tame 🙂 xx00xx

There are swans on the lake at our family cabin. I have gotten them to take bread from my hand if I’m feeding them off the dock. The like to play chase with Duke too. 🙂 http://laurawelser.wordpress.com/2011/08/27/duker-day-and-the-swans/
I agree with Motor Man, I think the doorbell may be next!
