Smoke On The Water

It’s Saturday, and that means I’m sharing sunrise pictures. You may recall I mentioned last weekend that we are occasionally getting smoke in our area from a wildfire burning in the Dismal Swamp. Motor Man says that’s about 35 miles from us – “as the crow flies”.

I can’t really say if what you see in these photos from last Friday’s sunrise is clouds or smoke. But it made for a pretty sunrise anyway. I love it when I wake up, look out the window and see this. Because I know I’ll have a series of sunrise photos.

There’s the sun, just peeping over the horizon. Wake up! Wake up!

This next picture really shows the clouds/smoke.

But there was absolutely no doubt that this was (cough, cough) smoke during the sunrise on Thursday.

Although there are hundreds of firefighters working on it, the experts are saying that it will take several inches of rain to put out this fire.

Right now, forfeiting the sunrise to rain for a few days would be well worth it.

  1. well i think they are gorgeous!!! knowing that these sunrises were happening every morning, right outside the door would motivate me each & everyday to be an early riser. no 2 sunrises are ever the same, i would never want to miss one!!!

i like the last one….misty magic!!!!

  2. I sort of like the last smoky one….it seems misty…and sort of magical….but I will pray for rain for the fire!

  3. Love that third photo – with the sun peeking out under the clouds, and the light shining above! I’ve only ever seen smoke like that in Oregon – crazy how far away a fire can be and how the smoke travels. You could even smell the fire in the air there some days.

  4. Such beautiful views you have…..sunrises and sunsets are my favorite pictures too. It is sad that what “could” be mist is possibly smoke from that terrible fire in the Dismal Swamp though. Hopefully some of the heavy rains that have been gracing various spots in Virginia will manage to find their way THERE and help with the fire. Meanwhile, enjoy the awesome views you have – the photos are true gems!

  5. Praying for a tropical deluge to help the firefighters and so Eddie can breathe easily again.
But there’s beauty in everything…beautiful sunrises/sunsets come hand in hand with the fire!

  6. Isn’t there an OLD song titled “Smoke on the Water”? or is it only in my OLD mind??

  7. KNEW I hadn’t completely lost my mind….
“SMOKE ON THE WATER” Deep Purple…1972!!
Perhaps the mind isn’t completely gone!

  8. oh dear. i am terrified of wildfires here. i hope they can get it under control!

  9. Beautiful. I woke up to a beautiful sky as well, and with all that beauty it almost felt like God made the sky just for me… and you.

  10. It’s been very interesting since the fire started – and it all depends on the direction of the wind – but with that much smoke up there, the sunrises and sunsets will be great !! The next to last is my favorite …….

  11. I actually was up this morning when the sun came up and I immediately thought of you and your photos. I could just kick myself that I didn’t grab the camera but I wasn’t fully awake yet and not thinking clearly.
Are you guy supposed to get any rain soon? Certainly hope so! Take care and hope you have a great Saturday!

  12. Lovely sunrise – the smoke definately adds something to your picture but I’ll bet you don’t want it. The burning smell must be awful. Are you suffering from lack of rain as well?

  13. Your photos are wonderful. I sure hope they get the fires put out soon. I worry for the health issues the smoke may cause you all. My positive thoughts are with you & your family. 🙂

  14. Nice pictures, even the hazy one. So much depends on the wind, it can go any direction.

I am hoping the rain that came today (Sunday the 21th) will help.
The good thing is the smoke does not stop the great sunset pictures.

  16. Beautiful pictures. I will hope for rain for you.
