A Little Italian Restaurant

For many years, Motor Man and I have been going to Anna’s, a little Italian restaurant in Hampton. It’s near our local race track, so late on Saturday nights during the season, the place is filled with race teams.

But, perhaps more importantly to us, each Wednesday night, we meet two other couples there for dinner. We met them through racing, but many nights, racing isn’t even a conversation topic. We share the good times and bad in each other’s lives. We tell jokes. We have cake, cards and presents when there’s a birthday among us,

We exchange gifts at Christmas,

We celebrate.

We’ve known for a long, long time how special Anna’s is, as well as the family who owns it. At lunchtime Wednesday, a few other folks discovered it too.

And, as a result of the publicity earlier in the day, a normally quiet little Italian restaurant was bustling Wednesday evening. But, thankfully, there was still room for the regulars.

  1. How fun and exciting for you all AND the restaurant owners; Now that the word’s out do you think you’ll have trouble getting a table?

    Cheers! MJ

  2. He came through Wilkes County, my little spot in the world, spoke at my old high school, and ate BBQ Ribs at Tipton’s. Guess he was ready for a little Italian dining when he reached VA! Do you suppose he heard about the two of us and then made his plans? That’s going to be my story!

  3. Wow…..that’s so super that you and the other couples meet at Anna’s regularly to celebrate and catch up, etc. Imagine what a boost to Anna’s that visit by the Prez and his entourage was and will be for a while! Nice all around I’d say.

  4. Crazy! So fun that he (someone!) chose your hot spot! And I love the friendships, and what you describe between you all!

  5. What a great story Dianna! BTW….Remind me to ask for your autograph when I see you next month!!

  6. What a special table of friends. You are blessed with good friends and their regular fellowship.

  7. It’s shame this couldn’t have happened when Chris (founder of the restaurant, for your followers)was alive!

  8. That must be an absolute joy to do that on a regular basis and with people that mean so much! I hope there’s *always* room for the regulars;)

  9. How cool is that? Michelle and I have the same sweater (not the one in this picture, but one sweater, nonetheless). I feel very cool.

  10. Holy Cow! That is not what I was expecting! Great story, even before I got to the “other folks” part.

  11. Wow! I’ll have to remember to stop there if I’m ever in or near Hampton!

  12. how cool is that?! 🙂

  13. How exciting!! Michelle looks great. Wish I could look that great everyday, lol. I wish my best friends lived closer so we could get together every week!

  14. The restaurant and your friends sounds delightful. To have the connection with a historical moment of the President being in a place so familiar to you & Motorman is awesome. You have a knack for connecting with history in a special way. 🙂

  15. Sounds like their visit was big for business!! I wonder what they had? I usually get an extra crispy pepperoni pizza and some well-done fries .. Great pics of the Anna’s crew – hello to everybody!

  16. Hi Diana! It’s wonderful to have a group of friends to get together with on a regular basis. And now Anna’s will definitely be an even more popular spot. Just curious, what do you usually order there? Have a great weekend!

    • Hi, Cheryl,
Motor Man and I split a personal pepperoni pizza and an order of fries. One of us “girls” usually brings dessert. Yes, they let us bring our own!

  17. That’s great they stopped at Anna’s. I’m sorry Connor and I didn’t arrive in time to
visit there last time. I think Chris would have been pleased to see them arrive and I bet he would have treated them just like all his customers …just like they were family.

  18. Wow!! and what fun you and your friends must have!

  19. Wow, how exciting is that!!! Good for business as well 😉
You and your friends sound as if you really enjoy each others company and that’s great.

I heard about the President and First Lady going to Anna’s. I know that was a great treat for everyone. Chuck and I are not famous, but
when we were in Surry Thursday, we ate at Anna’s that is standing where there use to be a big general store when you and I were kids.
For the life of me I can not remember the name of the store or the owner, but see it very clearly in my head. Do you remember Dianna?
It’s right in front of Mrs.Gill’s old house right before the old court house.

  21. Oh my goodness, how exciting. I love little non-descript places like Anna’s. I hope your place stays low-key now!

  22. How exciting. Dining with the prez–almost!

  23. That’s nice that you get together with friends regularly. What a blessing. Interesting, Anna’s was obviously recommended by someone.
