One of the prompts this week over at Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop included an opportunity to share our nativity scene.
If you’ve been visiting my blog for any length of time, you may have caught glimpses of the interior of our home in some of my posts. And perhaps you have noticed that I lean toward simple furnishings: old (preferably) oak furniture, baskets, old quilts, etc.
Our nativity scene reflects my simple taste.
This is Heavenly Blessings from Avon. A family member gave me The Holy Family in 1986, and through the years, thanks to E-bay, I’ve added the shepherd boy, an angel, the three kings, the camel and donkey. While writing this post, I took a side-trip to E-bay and found the sheep and a different angel (Buy-it-now), and have placed a bid on the drummer boy.
For many years, I didn’t have a stable, and just used a small, old wooden box turned on its side. Two years ago, I found this stable in an antique shop, and knew it was perfect for our nativity. I don’t recall where I found the little star, but I’ve had it many years.
This prompt gave me the push I needed to add the missing pieces to our nativity. It will be nice to have the complete set.
And it’s only taken me twenty-five years.

I love the simplicity of the set! As you know, things worth having are worth waiting for…
Who’d have ever thought that sometime in our life we’d be able to “put a bid” on the drummer boy?
In looking at the style, I thought it might be “Precious Moments.” Just beautiful…
As a child, I loved to line up our family Nativity set; we had a few pieces missing and one of the wise men fell victim to a dog who liked to chew, but he still stood there, tattered and cracked, in line with the others to give his gift.
Sweet post!! MJ
What a great story! EBay and careful shopping has helped you flesh out the set….a fun collection to have and a nice “history” behind it all.

What a darling, simple Nativity scene. Fits right in with your ‘country’ furnishings.
My daughter wanted the nativity scene she’s grown up with ~ so, of course, I gave it to her! So no nativity scene here this year. I love this – especially the stable you found! Looks like some of the beautiful old barns you photograph. I’ll have to look around something for us…I think the right one will “find me”!
This is very sweet. I love how you continue to collect more pieces. The stable it a perfect choice!
What a pretty set! At first I thought they were Precious Moments!
I love all your figures and love, love the stable. That little stable and star were destined for this scene. ♪”O Holy Night”♫
Looks just like you! I love the simplicity of it. Mine is made out of corn husks with a few angels bought in Europe and I love putting it out every Christmas. Lovely post.
I love that stable! One of my favorite things to do is visit antique shops. We went to the one in town yesterday.
Just look what you have done in 25 years!!!!!! Remarkable…..
i like the little stable. 🙂
This is a wonderful display. Even better that you can still find the pieces! That is a great stable.
Very sweet.
Less is more sometimes … & the stable and star are great! But one question : I remember that little box turned on the side at Christmastime. Still have it ??
Love it! I really thought it was Precious Moments at first glance. My mom still has the set from when I was little. We have great pictures of my brothers and myself kneeling at the fireplace and checking it all out. Now, we have precious pictures of our own kids doing the exact same thing…with the exact same set!
The best things in life are worth waiting for, and I find that the search is a lot of the fun. At least your taste has been consistent to allow you to collect these pieces during the past 25 years! I find that my taste has changed quite a bit and much of what I collected years ago doesn’t work for me anymore. Oh well, that too can be fun!
Dianna, this is precious!! I love the simplicity of it! And isn’t it amazing what one can find on eBay? I’m glad you could find the other pieces.
I just came from another blog showing an Avon set that was just a little different. 🙂
I love this one and the stable is perfect!
Your home sounds comfy!
I like your set, love the simplicity and the stable is perfect!

That stable added just the right touch to your nativity. I like the simplicity of it a lot.
I think it’s perfect — and the fact that
you have collected it over the years makes it
even more special!!
What a family treasure. Big or small it still sends the reason for the season. I love it.
Isn’t ‘simple’ the best? And don’t you imagine the original was simple as well. Love it!
I love precious moments! That is the sweetest set. Love ebay too! 🙂
A very sweet nativity. We don’t have one anymore and I think after reading this, it’s about time we did-because it’s never too late 🙂 I hope you got your other pieces! Sorry I have been MIA Dianna, been recovering from food poisoning I got on Tuesday-Bah. I think I’m gonna live now 🙂
Sweet post. Sweet picture. Sweet story, all the way around.
I collected the whole set back in the 80’s 90’s when they first came out. I am only missing the sheep. Back when I was collecting these pieces, I did ceramics and made my own manger… the whole set means so much to me… as it does you.
