Barn Charm Mystery

This weekend, while looking through my pictures for an entry for today’s Barn Charm, I uncovered a mystery.

This neat little red barn is on property in a neighboring county. It just so happens that my paternal grandparents were married in the old house on this same farm. (Sorry,  I was so focused on barn pictures, I didn’t take one of the house. A post for another day.)

When I first looked at the picture, I thought… should I edit out that basketball goal on the front of the barn?

Then I looked at a picture I had taken from another angle. Now you may be able to figure this out immediately, but try as I might, I couldn’t understand how the basketball goal disappeared from the front of that barn. And what is that white thing out in the trees?

So Sunday morning, I asked Motor Man could we please drive out there again? It’s about 20 miles each way. And of course, he said yes. But, when he looked at the pictures, he also knew what was going on with the basketball goal. He just couldn’t convince me.

Here’s the picture I took Sunday. There’s the goal again, right there on the front of the barn.

And, now, the mystery is solved. Just like Motor Man said. The basketball goal’s black pole is much easier to see in this picture, than in the second one I posted above.

Yes, it’s just an optical illusion. But I prefer mystery.

Linking up to Barn Charm.

  1. I think I prefer mystery also…sometimes the reality isn’t nearly so intriguing! Nice photos…Motor Man sounds like he is as agreeable as my Dan is…rarely tells me no.

  2. Oh I like mysteries too and looking at that first picture and the second one REALLY makes you think. Interesting optical illusion though – AND a very nice red barn! Appears to have weathered the years in fine form.

  3. I had to really look a few times to put it in perspective (so to speak!) Nice to see the different weather/moods in the two sets of photos….and I really have to find a project to do … or a wall of my house to paint that color. I’m becoming very attached to barn red!!

  4. lovely barn—fun basketball hoop story

  5. Probably another mystery conversation going on inside the house: “Who are those people taking pictures of the barn? Weren’t they here not too long ago taking pictures? What the heck is wrong with people these days — always running around with their cameras snapping pictures of this and that. For goodness sake, it’s a barn…” 🙂

  6. Optical illusions can really play havoc with my mind! Of course, it doesn’t take a lot!

  7. i always wonder if i will ever see anyone & they will ask me about my picture taking. great shots. (:

  8. Mystery and Charm! It is a sweet red barn, I like the bottom shot BB goal and all! Believe me, I love the sun but overcast days make for some nice picture taking 🙂 Charming barn Dianna!

  9. Never would have guessed it was that far away from the barn. Nice of Motor Man to drive back out there with you!

  10. That is so interesting! I much like the mystery of it. 🙂

  11. The distance between the barn and the basketball hoop is greater than we perceive. Interesting.

  12. i love that you have a history with this barn!

  13. Gosh, this really had me stumped! I had to get another cup of coffee, then go back and start from the beginning 🙂 Really interesting!

  14. Alright it’s a mystery to me because I still can’t figure out how it’s possible! Apparently my mind just doesn’t think like that LOL.

  15. so funny that you had to drive out there to ‘see for yourself’. 🙂

  16. Motor Man is quite a guy to drive that far again so you could solve the mystery, Dianna! I didn’t see at first how the goal “moved”, either! Very nice red barn. I noticed in the third photo that it looks like some kind of lights in the window, but I don’t see any electric lines going to the barn. Maybe I’m missing them or maybe the loft is just used for storage. Maybe I’m seeing things. 🙂

  17. OK it took awhile but I got it. But where did the pine tree go? It’s in some pictures but not all? Very odd.

  18. I see what you mean about the bball hoop… it’s a mystery! Beautiful barn for sure

Thanks so much for joining this week’s Barn Charm =)

  19. Very cool .. but there’s more . Notice the playset to the left of the barn? You can see just a corner of it in the first pic, but it’s totally gone in the second. You can see most of it in the third, but … it’s gone in the fourth picture !! Perspective is everything!!

  20. A fine mystery! I like the barn….

  21. I like the barn; now I’ve got to go back and figure all this out! lol

  22. I’m still mystified! lol

  23. It’s all about perspective, isn’t it? In life too, not just in photos.

  24. Odd, Dianna – I didn’t see the basketball goal at all – even in the first photo, until I started looking for it. And then the first place I saw it clearly was in the second photo! Go figure! In the first photo, on firs glance I thought it was a piece of white shutter or some other thing on the front of the barn, and just dismissed it, preferring the overall look of the barn.

In any event, it’s a wonderful photo!

  25. You had me for a sec there…I thought we were dealing with a haunted barn! Very cool pics. I’d love to see the house, too someday 🙂

  26. Lovely barn! I like seeing it in different lighting. Interesting how taking photos from different perspectives really changes what you see. I’ve taken photos of a barn that I was sure the silo was attached right next to it, but then in the next photo I see it’s really quite a ways away.

  27. ~rofl~ I love a good mystery too. This is so fun. Thanks for sharing this cheerful charm of a barn with us, I needed the smile. 🙂
