My Life In Songs

One of the prompts for this week’s Mama Kat’s Writers Workshop struck my fancy.

5.) List the songs that tell your life story (so far).

So, here they are, in chronological order:

1.) Diana by Paul Anka.  Of course, Paul didn’t realize when he wrote this song for me that I spell my name with two “N’s”, but I forgave him. “Please stay with me, Diana.”

2.) Little Sister by Elvis Presley. Since my two sisters were teenagers when I was born, this seems an appropriate song for my early life. “…I used to pull your pigtails, and pinch your turned-up nose.”

3.) Sounds Of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel. The song for all those days in school when I was too shy to speak up. “Hear my words that I might teach you. Take my arms that I might reach you. But my words, like silent raindrops fell.  And echoed in the wells of silence.”

4.) Brown-Eyed Girl by Van MorrisonFinally! Someone noticed us browneyed girls. “…all along the waterfall, with you, my brown-eyed girl.”

5.) Another Day by Paul McCartney.  The song for my years working as a secretary. “Slipping into stockings, stepping into shoes, dipping in the pocket of her raincoat. It’s just another day.”

6.) Rings by Cymarron. Love and marriage. “Ring, ring, golden ring, around the sun, around your pretty finger.”

7.) Danny’s Song by Kenny Loggins.  Ah, yes, the summer Marshall was born. “People smile and tell me I’m the lucky one. And we’ve just begun. Think I’m gonna have a son”.

8.) The Broken Road by Rascal Flatts.  For an unsettled few years.  “….I got lost a time or two, wiped my brow and kept pushing through. I couldn’t see that every sign pointed straight to you.”

9. So Happy Together by The Turtles.  The perfect song for my life these days. “And you say you belong to me and ease my mind. Imagine how the world could be, so very fine. So happy together.”

Have you ever thought about the list of songs that would define your life?

  1. What a great group of songs to “define Dianna”…..I think you put a lot of thought (and tunes) into this post – great photos and thanks for sharing the “song of Dianna”. It’s a tune I REALLY like!! 😉

    Pam (and Sam too!)

  2. Just like a fairy tale; bumps along the road and then happily ever after! Well done.

  3. I thought about doing this one, but since I already do the Thursday Theme Song, I decided not to think too long about it. You did a fantastic job of this! Loved the photos of you…all along the way!

  4. Love these – from one Brown Eyed Girl to another.

  5. I loved every single song and sang along as I read these 🙂 All of the photos were priceless; thank you for sharing them with us. MJ

  6. You did such a great job with this prompt! I thought of doing it but was just too overwhelmed with the countless song choices.

Love number 8! Charlie and I had that sang at our wedding. 🙂

  7. Very very nice Dianna! And what a lovely song you have made. And yes! to Brown-Eyed Girl!

  8. I love #9 and now you’ve put it in my mind. Great medley and lovely pictures to go with them.

  9. I know most of these songs…and agree, fab choices with a great inside look into your life 🙂 What a fun prompt – I may need to do this one!

  10. You did a really fine job on this prompt. I know it took a lot of thought to pair the pictures and songs. A great trip down your memory lane!

  11. WOW! What a great post. The photos go perfectly with each song but I do love #9. Made for each other!

  12. wow, you did great! i’d have a hard time.

  13. You really did a great job, Dianna! Broken Road sure can define a time in my life too. In fact, I think I’m still on it! ha!

  14. This is beautiful! I love each of those songs! They would all make my favorites list and I know all the words. I wanted to do this prompt but I felt so overwhelmed with all the options and knew it would take me years to complete it 😀 So I modified and combined it with another prompt.

Beautiful photos as well! I love how happy you look ;O)

  15. I love all of these songs. I’ll be hearing The Sounds of Silence in my head all day now!

  16. I know you put lots of thought and research into this and I love it! There were so many good songs in “our day” that we all knew the words to. The one I aways remember because I learned it on my guitar is a song by one of my favorites, John Denver. “I’m Leaving on a Jet Plane”…and I did! Right out of Hight School I flew from a small town in PA to Newport Beach, CA home of the Beach Boys and went to school there. I ended up living there for 10 years! Lots of good old memories.

  17. This is beautiful! Sounds of Silence is one of my all time favorite songs – so much kept inside….it resonated with me too!

  18. Bravo!!! Once again! And great pairings of song and photo .. I know how much music you like and are familiar with, so I’m surprised you were able to narrow it down! – but this is a great list … I actually have #6 on 45rpm, and it still sounds great !

  19. The last song seems to fit you so well; it’s obvious how happy you are together.

  20. You did great on listing and matching songs to your life. You are such a clever gal. Cool!
#4 is Taken straight from my thoughts and my life too:
“4.) Brown-Eyed Girl by Van Morrison. Finally! Someone noticed us brown-eyed girls. “…all along the waterfall, with you, my brown-eyed girl.””

  21. Shirley Matthews Dunn's avatar Shirley Matthews Dunn

As always you did a great job matching songs to your life.

  22. Dianna, love, love, LOVE this! So many things I do in life remind me of songs and there’s always music going on in my brain, so this was such a delight to read. FUN!! I loved your choice of songs to define your life. Someday (when I have more time to think about it) I’m going to have to try this. 😀

  23. Great list. I did this prompt too and we don’t have one song in common!

  24. I’ll have to put my thinking cap on for a list. However I always have a soundtrack and the annoying (to some) habit of snatching snippets of song and plugging them into the conversation.

  25. Love Brown Eyed Girl. And anything Rascal Flatts!

  26. No, I’ve never thought of that, interesting exercise. We were definitely of the same era, knew all those songs. The Sound of Silence is one of my all-time favorites.

  27. Sweet list! And I just realized I’ve spelled your name with one n…so now I know! ~ Sheila

  28. I was at an engagement party and the band started playing ‘Brown-Eyed Girl’. The pianist said something to the effect of all girls with brown eyes raise your hand. All of us ladies started looking at each other – we ALL had BLUE eyes!
