Have you heard?
This month is a “blue moon” month; there are two full moons occuring within the calendar month.
Last night, Motor Man and I spotted what I thought was the first full moon of the month as we ran an errand just after sunset.
(The errand was to go to Dollar General to stock up on bread for the swans. It’s on sale there for $1.00 per loaf. I had forgotten to stop earlier in the day, and Bride and Groom ate the last slice we had while I was taking sunset photos.)
As I downloaded my pictures last night, I was thinking of today’s blog post about the full moon – complete with photos.
Then I decided it would be wise to check on the actual date of the full moon – just to be sure. And I discovered that the full moon is TONIGHT, not last night.
Writing this blog is sometimes an educational experience. I’d always heard that “blue moon” refers to the second full moon within a calendar month. But, in doing research for this post, I learned that an older definition of the term was the third full moon in a season that had four full moons. It’s very complicated, and if you’d like the entire explanation, here’s a link: http://www.infoplease.com/spot/bluemoon1.html/
Science is such a challenge. I’ll just stick to trying to get pictures of the moon: blue or otherwise.
