Have You Ever Wondered?

When you see a contrail in the sky, do you ever wonder what kind of plane it is, where it departed and where it’s going?

Monday afternoon on our way home, Motor Man and I noticed a particularly wide contrail.  He commented that the plane must be really large.

When he came in the house, he immediately logged on to one of his favorite web-sites, Flight Aware.  He learned that it was a United Airlines plane, a Boeing 747.  It had departed Hunter Air Force Base in Savannah, Georgia, and was en route to Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany.  The length of the flight was a little less than eight hours, and the plane was traveling in excess of 600 miles per hour.

By the time I thought about taking a picture, the contrail had nearly dissipated.

Although Motor Man is on that site often, we’ve really only “researched” a particular contrail a time or two in the past.

Isn’t that internet amazing?

  1. The contrails leave cool patterns and I agree the internet is wonderful. When I don’t remember who or what,I tend to use it as my “brain back up system.” 🙂

  2. Oh yes, I often wonder who is on the plane and where it’s headed. The internet…what did we ever do without it?

  3. I love that app as well! Such fun to see who is going where in the skies!

  4. It is amazing the information you can get off the internet! Particularly he was able to look up that exact plane because of coordinates (I am guessing) and find out where it is going and when it is landing. Mind boggling.

  5. MOST of the time I can’t imagine what I did before the Internet. The contrails are beautiful – especially the patterns in the sky. Never checked out that site – will have to look It up!

  6. I enjoying watching the sky and wondering about the destinations of aircraft.
I love the internet for those spontaneous ponderings that pop up from time-to-time. It’s amazing how much you learn and how fast it’s at your fingertips.

Chuck and I use the internet often when we are discussing something and we do not know the correct answer. I do find it very interesting the site that JR went on about the flight. Very interesting. Good blog!!

  8. It is amazing … until it isn’t .. like I always say ..
but – I do love it when I can pinpoint something using it; like a town somewhere on Google Earth, or when the ISS will pass .. Never used it for a contrail, though ..!

  9. You can do just about anything on the internet including tracking contrails…..We’re in the Dulles flight path so see planes and contrails all the time……and I almost always wish I was on board going somewhere exciting!

  10. Never in my life have I known the name of those fluffy cloud tails that jets leave behind in the sky. Contrails! Great to know, and now I’m reading all about them…

  11. I had no idea you could learn that on the internet! Yes, I do wonder about them sometimes.

  12. I never heard of tracing a contrail on the internet. Amazing is the only appropriate word.
