Reedville Celebrates The Fourth

Located about two hours from us is the historic little waterfront town of Reedville, Virginia, well-known for its menhaden fishing industry. Let me tell ya: that little town celebrates Independence Day.

Motor Man and I discovered the holiday festivities a few years ago when we just happened to visit Reedville during the first week of July. There are many old homes in the town, and almost everyone of them is decorated for the Fourth.

This beautiful old Victorian is our favorite.

Last year, we invited our friends, Bill and Doris, to join us on our annual trip. We ate lunch at The Crazy Crab, a casual little restaurant right on the waterfront.

It was the first time that our visit was on the day of Reedville’s Fourth of July parade.

It was your typical small-town America parade. There were military vehicles.

Vintage cars and street rods.

And, of course, a reminder of why we celebrate the holiday.

Hope you’re all decked out in red, white and blue, Reedville.  Motor Man and I will be there soon!

  1. Sounds like a typical small-town 4th of July celebration. Hilton used to have a parade on Main Street but have no idea if they still do it. A reminder of their once small-town status. Have fun!

  11. You wrote about a wonderful area. When I was working for the telephone company, I dispatched the men on troubles all over this area (the Northern Neck). One of the men told me they used this menhaden fish in cosmetics and misscellaneous other things. Zapata-Haynie was the company that processed the fish. They had a fleet of airplanes that spotted the fish for the trawlers and they would go out and catch big nets of them. I don’t think they were good for eating..I don’t know if I ever used their product or not……………………jj

  12. I’m glad to see Independence Day truly celebrated. I think we’ve lost a lot of our spirit in some areas.
