The Importance Of Beeing Careful

Back in the spring, when it came time to choose plants for my flower boxes, I decided on “wave” petunias. There are six flower boxes on the deck and one on an upper balcony.

I also have a flower pot on a table on the deck.  This picture was taken June 23.

And this one was taken yesterday.

I’ve really been babying all these petunias: watering them daily if there’s no rain. And I’ve been deadheading them all season with reckless abandon.

Until this week.

This gives the appearance of an innocent container of petunias, right? But potential danger lurks here. Enlarge the picture, and look just to the right of the two darker flowers in the center.

Here, I did it for you.

In the past few days, more times than I can count, I’ve had my hand within an inch or two of one of these before seeing it. They don’t seem to be aggressive, they aren’t bothered by the water from the garden hose, and they haven’t given any indication of attacking me.

However, I have decided that it’s in my best interest to bee a little more careful during my future deadheading chores.

  1. Unless you have pollen they can taste, you are probably safe, until you actually pinch one of them instead of the flower! The petunias are simply beautiful! (I am sneaking in a few “reads” this morning – missing everyone!)

  2. The flowers are beautiful and without the bee, we wouldn’t have any…but I don’t blame you…BEEING careful is wise! I was afraid there was a snake hiding in all that ‘jungle’!

  3. Beautiful petunias! Your loving care has really paid off. Keep beeing cautious!

  4. Ohhh, I actually weeded last week without my gloves. So grateful something unexpected didn’t happen. Bee careful, friend. Beautiful flowers. Wave petunias? Now I know their name. Thank you.

  5. reaching in to disrupt their dinner! 🙂

  6. Such lovely flowers – so bright and cheerful…and a slightly unusual (in the good sense of that word!) shade! I’m glad you spotted him before he attacked you…now that you’re aware, I’m sure you’ll be safe!!

  7. I got stung by a wasp putting my hand in the wrong place! Be careful.
I see Bride and Groom swans in the first photo…yay!!
Your petunias are looking good. Have a nice weekend!

  8. Do bee careful! We need those bees for certain, but we don’t need to be stung. The bees are all over our flowers, and I always am hesitant to go near them. Memories of being stung when I was a child, and also being chased by a bumblebee are still vivid in my mind! Beautiful petunias, by the way. I have some red & white ones just like those.

  9. I was looking for a snake! Then I thought I saw a bird’s nest; completely overlooked the bee. The flowers are beautiful by the way!

  10. Please do BEE careful! I’m glad we both got the same color of wave petunias….mine are going like mad too – however I haven’t seen ANY bees around them! Lovely photos – they are a PERFECT touch of color in your boxes and planters…….
