Most of us have had those times when we are just so thankful. So very thankful. As in weak-in-the-knees thankful.
We had one of those experiences last night.
We got home from dinner around 6, and I put some eggs on to boil. Usually I set the timer, but last night, I didn’t. I went to the other end of the house and got busy on the computer, intending to go back and check on the eggs in a few minutes.
About an hour later, Motor Man (in the same room with me) said: “I smell something burning.”. Those are such frightening words until you can determine the cause of that odor. I had clothes in the dryer, so I immediately thought that might be it, but it wasn’t.
We both walked down the hall toward the kitchen…and then I remembered.
When I first realized what had happened, I was worried that the pan was about to catch fire, so I put it in the sink and added water. (And, yes, before I moved it, I stopped to think was grease involved.)
There was no smoke….yet….so that’s why the smoke detectors weren’t activated.
We immediately opened windows, turned on exhaust fans, breathed sighs of relief…
…and lifted up thanks.
~These Days Of Mine~
Isn’t that scary? I had a similar experience last year when I boiled two eggs and forgot to put water in the pot. It was 4:00 a.m. and I guess I was still half asleep. I turned on the stove top and went upstairs to get ready for work. When I came downstairs, I smelled something strange. I looked inside the pot and felt sick when I realized what I’d done. By the grace of God, no fire started.
I’m glad your experience didn’t end tragically either. It is so frightening!
Yikes! Now that’s what I call hard-boiled! So glad everything was OK (other than the smell of course!).

So close, so scary. What a coincidence as I have been thinking of the horrors of fire lately. All your treasures and memories gone in the blink of the eye. No replacing them. Thankfully no harm was done, except to your heart!
OH yes. I did that not too long ago with a pan of water that I was boiling to put the eggs into!!! I totally understand that feeling and the gratefulness that follows. So glad this turned out okay for you. I get so distracted sometimes and I have to really remind myself to be more careful these days. Hugs.
I have yet to do that with eggs but I can’t tell you how many pots of carrots with a bit of butter and sugar added that I have forgotten on the stove top… what a sticky, black mess! Thankfully I have never had a fire, knock on wood, and I am glad all was okay for you.
Goodness! I’m so thankful right along with you that it wasn’t much worse. We’ve all done this one time or another (mine wasn’t with eggs though). My sister ruined her electric stove burner (the smooth surface kind) when she too got busy on her computer and forgot about a pot on the stove; she had to get a new one because it could not be repaired. So yes, much gratefulness for your incident. Once again, it shows me what a distraction these darn computers can be (but we wouldn’t want to be without one, would we?).
I bet you threw the pan away!
I’m glad it all turned out for the best..
The close calls are the scariest sometimes..
That was a close call and a very scary story that happens to most of us! Thank goodness for the safe and happy outcome. 🙂
Oh My Goodness – glad all you lost were 3 eggs and a pan! Back in the day when one heat disinfected contact lenses in a self-contained heat unit, I did the same thing with my contacts. My heat unit played out, so I did the alternative in a pan of water on the stove – I forgot them and had a melted plastic case in the hot pan. YUCK!!!!
It’s scary when things like that happen. Thank goodness that there was no major damage.
It’s called a “senior moment”! I have them quite often, it usually slips my mind about the time I think about it. Glad you had not left home and left it on.
So thankful everything worked out OK, Been there and done that!
Computers are bad about that – claiming our interest and making us forget what we were doing/cooking, Voice of experience!
I am at that age that this kind of thing has started happening around here. It’s scary.
So glad you’re ok.

That’s a new egg recipe! 😉 Glad everything turned out well.
