Sweet Ride

“Life with you is like a road trip;
we may not always know where we’re going, but it’s a sweet ride.”

Sunday morning, Motor Man and I left early on our annual day trip to Reedville. The old homes were decorated beautifully for the Fourth of July.  There really isn’t much to do in that little town, though, so after we cruised Main and took pictures, we headed toward home.

And on the way, we rode by Bay Aviation, which offers aerial sightseeing tours of the area. Motor Man LOVES to fly. Me? Not so much. But it was a beautiful day, and I knew how much my hubby would enjoy seeing the Northern Neck of Virginia from the air.

The plane! The plane!

A quick photo before our flight. “Pardon me, is my fear showing?”

I looked rather official sitting at the instrument panel, wearing my headset.  We all know that looks can be deceiving.

Motor Man insisted I sit up front. He was perfectly happy in the back.

Virginia’s Northern Neck is on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay, and for a great deal of our flight, we were over the Bay. We flew over The New Point Comfort Lighthouse, which was built in 1805. I must admit, I didn’t know much about it until I did some research earlier today.  Here’s the link to a wonderful web-site with the history of the lighthouse.

Several bodies of water were visible during our tour, including the Severn, the Piankatank and the Rappahannock rivers. There was some smoke in the air from wildfires burning in northeastern North Carolina.

There were just a few boats along this little stretch of beach.

I must admit, as our flight was nearing its end, I was glad to see this come into view.

Other than a tiny bit of turbulence, referred to by our pilot as “air bubbles”,  I really did enjoy the flight.

Sometimes you have to just put fear aside for a sweet ride.

  1. It amazes me that you can always post an interesting, fun blog. What amazes me even more is the fact that Motor Man and I are both terrified of high places but we both love to fly! Go figure!

  2. I love your photos, especially the lighthouse! I had to get out my Virginia Atlas and Gazetteer to see where you were! We’ve been in the area before for research – but have never seen the view from the air!

  3. That looks so fun – what wonderful views!

  4. Oh, I wish I could do that. But I’d get sick, 😦 Looks like fun!

  5. Aren’t you the adventurous one! New England is full of light houses, and when we visit I love looking them up ~ ususally have some fascinating history and stories connected to them.

  6. how nice of you to do this for your hubby’s enjoyment! i’m glad it was fun for you too!

  7. I love those aerial views! I probably would have gotten sick…I am not so afraid of being up in the air….but those “air bubbles” would have done me in! Good for you for being brave for Motor Man…it was a very unselfish act!

  8. Wow!! What an exciting day!! Loved the photos, too.

Just a question, you refer to the “Piankatank” and the “Rappahannock” rivers and I was wondering, are those Native American names? Growing up in what was formerly Cree and Sioux country, native names seem to jump out at me. Any idea their origin? Thanks .. MJ

  9. Oh what fun!!!!
All three of us here have been in those small planes a number of times and they are such a blast.
Just love the different perspective one gets from being in the air.
A sweet thing you did for your MM.

  10. Small planes are a really great way to take pix, if you can get used to that “sliding through the air” feeling. You were so brave!

  11. Thanks for the air tour! Great pics, even with the smoke from the fires. Why didn’t he let you land ?!

  12. Cool as a cucumber and a virtual show to prove it. : )
Have camera will travel over a very interesting coastline. : ) What fun!

  13. Bless your heart for taking that flight with Motor Man. I’m not a fan of flying either but I could never get on one of those little planes! I love that picture of the lighthouse!

  14. That’s nice you could put your fears aside to go on the flight with Motor Man. I can’t get past this agoraphobia thing to make trips like this. Just reading about it makes me feel uneasy. But I’m happy for you!

  15. Lots of fun … my hubby hates small planes. He says he is afraid he may just jump out … as irrational as that is! Too funny!

  16. really wonderful photo’s!! it’s funny that i don’t love to fly BUT i LOVED the hot air balloon ride!! sweet trips for you and motor man!!

the land surrounding the lighthouse looks heart-shaped!!!

  17. That heart shaped island with the light house is a really great picture. :0)

  18. Great pictures. You even got another smile out of Motor Man! Off to check out the lighthouse link, thanks.

  19. What beautiful pictures! Wow Dianna, you didn’t tell me that you were “flying” to Reedville for the 4th! You are much braver that I would have been!! Thanks for sharing your adventure!!

  20. Oh wow that is so awesome. What a great view. Your pictures are just beautiful!

  21. Love these pics! Amazing how peaceful and beautiful things look from above! As a Navy wife (Chicken’s a navigator) you’re going to find this funny, but If I was on that flight I would have had a parachute and a life jacket…..on and ready!! 🙂
