Our First Experience With Murphy

Today, I’m participating in Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop. My prompt is:

5.) What was the occasion? Write about the last time you stayed in a hotel.

Although Motor Man and I technically stayed in a hotel when we went on vacation to California in January with our friends, Bev and Bill,  it was a timeshare. So it wasn’t exactly a hotel experience.

Our most recent REAL hotel stay was in December, when we went to Orlando for the Performance Racing Industry tradeshow.  We stayed at the Rosen Centre which is within easy walking distance of the Orange County Convention Center, where the tradeshow was taking place.

We made our reservations through the PRI home office a couple months in advance, and at that time, requested a room with either a queen or king bed. But when we checked into the hotel, we were told that the only available rooms had full size beds. EXCEPT for a hospitality suite room.

We didn’t really need all that entertaining space, but we knew the queen bed would be more comfortable, so we went with the hospitality room. Finding a spot for the laptop was no problem.

There was just one thing that made me a bit uneasy. THIS was the bed.

Oh, yes. It was a Murphy bed, and our first experience sleeping in one. We made lots of jokes about it. One of our friends on the trip suggested that I sleep with my cell phone, just in case the bed swallowed us. I suggested to them that they send help if Motor Man wasn’t at the show the next day; we may be trapped in the wall.

It wasn’t a bad experience. The bed was comfortable, but not having a bedside table was a little inconvenient.  “Murphy” didn’t retreat back into the wall, taking us hostage. (Those old sit-com gags stay with us forever, I guess.)

Have you ever slept in a Murphy bed? Were you apprehensive?

  1. I remember you telling me about the Murphy bed at the time…..and YES those old sit-coms flashed through MY mind too! Glad you didn’t get eaten alive by that bed – but I just bet you’d have preferred a “normal” bed to the Murphy. Chalk it up to a “learning experience” !! LOL

  2. I’ve never slept in a Murphy bed but I always thought they were “cool” on those old TV shows … who knew hotels had them? And why?

  3. I’ve never slept in one. My boys would get a kick out of that though they’d probably break it or one of them would end up folded up in there!

  4. Very funny!! I have to admit you had me for a minute – due to the normal connotation of the word “Murphy”. And I love the pic of Motor Man in the sprawling suite with his laptop. Never slept in a Murphy bed but you two were extremely brave!!

  5. Oh gosh! Funny Dianna 😀 No, never slept in a Murphy bed.

  6. My mom has one in her home in Florida! It is a small 3 bedroom home but she needed one bedroom for her sewing stuff! So..she had a Murphy bed built in, along with much wall storage…cabinets and drawers. I haven’t slept in it, but my son did when he visited her…said it was fine. Glad you had a good experience!

  7. So glad it was comfortable. No, I have never slept in one. I do love my “murphy” ironing board that comes out of the wall. It certainly saves on the chore of storing and setting up an ironing board.

  8. Great post. No, never slept in a Murphy bed.

  9. Haha! would have chosen the same – bigger bed, bigger room. Did sleep in a murphy – type bed in Europe once. It wasn’t comfortable at all!!

  10. Yes I slept in a Murphy bed and it was very comfortable. It sure beats one of those pull out sofa beds!

  11. too funny. i guess if you were going to be having meetings in your room, you’d want to hide the bed… 🙂

  12. This was funny! Never slept in one .. this one looks kinda’ neat, though. I wonder if there’s a version somewhere that also has a bedside table that folds out with the bed ?? Hmmm…. ??

  13. No, never slept in a murphy bed. In Orlando? I’d figure that for an older city like Chicago. I’d have a problem not having a side-table, too—I have to have a fan on me when I sleep and need a spot for my small portable fan to sit!

  14. Ha! I’ve never slept in one but I have been threatening to get one for my kiddo so she has more room to play in her room!

  15. 😆 I’ve always heard of Murphy Beds but I never actually saw one. I think it’s neat that you and MM got to experience such a novelty of a stay over. Great photos. 🙂

  16. Yes, right after graduating high school. My best friend was going to business school in the big city of Spokane and the apartment she was renting had one. I got to sleep in it and thought it was very cool!

  17. I’ve never slept in one, or even seen a real one. I’m glad you didn’t get stuck in the wall! lol

  18. I haven’t slept in a murphy bed either. But I think I’d be more comfortable in one of those than in the top bunk. That truly is scary!

  19. Oh gosh! A Murphy bed?!! I’ve ever slept in one, but I wouldn’t want to. I probably wouldn’t have slept because I’d be worried all night that the bed would swallow me up into the wall and….wait for it….I’m claustrophobic!! 😀 No Murphy bed for me!

I do not remember sleeping in a Murphy bed before and I think I would remember. So glad you and Motor Man did not get lost to us for ever!!
