Sailing On The Wolf

Last week, the townfolk were all abuzz about the Schooner Wolf visiting Smithfield. The ship cruised by our house and on into town last Wednesday during high tide, but it was too dark for me to get good photos.

The ship was open for dockside tours during its two-day visit, but because the water in our area is so shallow, it wasn’t possible for the crew to take passengers on a sail. But Motor Man discovered that, upon leaving Smithfield, the ship was traveling to Portsmouth (about 45 minutes away), where they were offering a sunset sail on Sunday. As you know, we’re always up for an adventure.

Sir, do you have a license to operate this vessel?

Well, obviously they’ll let anybody sail this ship.

Motor Man.  Always making life fun.

It was a very comfortable trip with perfect weather. The captain and I chatted for awhile. Wonder who’s at the wheel now?

And, of course, I took sunset photos – this time from a sailing ship.

The lights of Portsmouth as we were nearing the end of our sail.

And The Wolf, back at the dock.

The crew is planning another visit to Smithfield next summer, and hopefully will be able to work with the tides to offer a short cruise (not sail) in our area.

Yes, our names are already on the list.

  1. Oh how FABULOUS! Great photos too…..how fun that both you and Marshall got to be “Captain” for a while (I almost said “drive the boat”!!) on the ship. I just know that was a sail to remember……..

  2. What a fun thing to do….almost as good as train rides!!

  3. That is wonderful! What great shots you got from your adventure! We are contemplating a sail on the American Rover out of Norfolk, once Dan is fully recovered. He is so much better – it is amazing! I love that sunset shot!

  4. You do look so comfortable barefoot. 🙂

  5. Ahhh the schooner life! We went on a long schooner sail in ME two years ago…it was spectacular. Thanks for triggering those fine memories.

  6. What a fun time! I always loved the water and now can’t get on a boat because of motion sickness brought on by this pesky inner ear thing. Drat it! Your sunset shot is pretty!

  7. oh, that looks like a perfect evening! 🙂

  8. Another great sunset sail – the 3rd – & I didn’t haul any line this time. I have to say that just sitting back and letting a professional crew do their thing is the way to go 😉 Love the pic of her back at the dock !

  9. Great pictures and memories of a special day on the water!

  10. how cool. Thanks for taking us along on your wonderful sail!!

  11. Beautiful! What a treat, to go for a sail on a ship like this! That’s one of the things on our list…to do a trip on a small sailing ship…as we know nothing about sailing, we’ll have to have professionals do the heavy lifting!
You look great at the wheel! ~ Sheila
