Town Barns

This barn, my entry for today’s Barn Charm, is located within the town limits of Smithfield, just one street over from Main. It is believed to date from the mid 1800’s.

And I’m not sure if the buildings in the next picture qualify as barns or not. Perhaps they’re just old sheds. But they’re on the same farm, so I thought I’d include them in today’s Barn Charm.

The property (including a house built in the late 1700’s), is owned by an elderly lady, who still lives there. The barns have fallen into disrepair, as has the house, to a certain extent. A few years ago, a group of volunteers met and offered their services in removing the vines from the house and barns. It was an attempt to prevent further damage to the structures.  I’m told the volunteers were asked by the landowner to leave the premises.

  1. Ooh, makes you wonder what is inside of that neat old barn. I can just imagine how it looked when it was new.

  2. Loved the birds making themselves at home along the rooftop!

  3. as i was reading i was thinking “wow, all that stuff grew back quickly”….huh, wonder why she made them leave? beautiful old buildings.

  4. Too bad the owner didn’t want the help removing those vines – I bet eventually the vines will pull the whole thing down. Interesting buildings though and I imagine in their day they were rather spectacular.

  5. It’s a shame she’s letting all of that history fall apart! I wondered if those barns, sheds and the house were still standing.

  6. I guess the owner was in the Ivy League.
Still, there is a beauty in disrepair and thanks to you, Dianna, we get to enjoy that.

  7. So much living history at this place.

  8. When I see barns like that it kinda makes me sad because I love those old original structures and it’s a bummer we’re loosing so many of them. I couldn’t help but chuckle at your last sentence….all I can think is she must’ve liked her buildings just the way they were, ‘thank you very much’. 🙂 LOL.

  9. These are buildings that should be preserved for future generations to have a glimpse of the past. Shame the owner doesn’t see it that way!

  10. Good Morning Dianna! I know the vines do damage to the structure but they sure make for an interesting capture! I have been cruising around looking for wood barns here in MissouREE and they are becoming hard to find. I love those rust red roofs! I like the little out buildings or sheds you captured too 🙂

  11. the metal roof and the buzzards with the overgrowth make for a great photo!

  12. The old barn looks dangerous doesn’t it? But it definitely has charm! If the people hadn’t asked permission to clear out the vines, I don’t blame her for asking them to leave.

  13. When I saw the link up of this barn on my page, I thought someone had been in my neck of the woods shooting barns… this looks very similar to a barn near Wappapello Lake just east of Poplar Bluff! LoL!

I so wish they had been permitted to spiffy up the place… maybe, she thought they’d come back later to steal something inside? Poor woman.

I’m thinking the other buildings are also barns, because they look too big to just be sheds. Glad you got these shots before they collapse!

Thanks so much for joining this week’s Barn Charm =)

  14. Those vines might be holding it all together!

  15. I wish more of the old barns were kept up. The newer metal ones just don’t have the same appeal as the old wooden ones. These are interesting shots, look at the buzzards on the roof of the first photo!

  16. I used to live not too awfully far from Smithfield. 🙂
The vines might be all that’s holding those barns together.
Love the first shot! Looks like the vultures are enjoying it.

It is a shame the owner would not let the people help clean up the property. It sounds like she is not use to people around and helping her, which in it’s self is sad.

  18. One of those buildings, was used as a dairy. I knew her parents, when they delivered milk to their customers in an old car with a rumble seat. And, yes Mary Emma (the daughter) has always been a recluse.

  19. It’s too bad the owner wouldn’t let the volunteers help. Neat old buildings, but they may not be around long.

  20. It almost looks like it’s covered with cobwebs.

  21. It is just too bad if it is true…sounds like someone old and set in their ways….and yes they all qualify as far as I am concerned…I would not have minded if you had shown us the house as well.

  22. Neat old barn. It looks like it is becoming one with the landscape.

  23. In many instances, older people become a bit cranky and mistrusting. It is a shame she did not want the volunteers to clean out the vines being that they are really pulling down the structure. It is so sad. What a treasure right there off of Main Street. I would love to see it. Wonderful captures. genie

  24. These are great, and they’re “right down the road” so to speak, from everything in town .. It’s one of those sites that you forget about because it’s always “right down the road.” I know one of the men who volunteered to help clean it, and he said she just told them to leave. So they did..
